Most people who use water supplied by a municipal water company only need to worry about POU treatment, because It is our water company's responsibility to provide biologically and chemically safe water that has most objectionable taste and odour causing substances removed, this is unfortunately not always the case as many of us will have experienced.. Most people using public water do not need to employ Point of Entry treatment devices or the more expensive Point of use devices like distillation and reverse osmosis. It is important, though to ensure the water you use for drinking and cooking is safe and free from harmful contaminants. Residual disinfectants (chlorine and/or chloramine, for example) added to keep water safe during distribution. Disinfection byproducts, like the trihalomethanes. Lead (as discussed elsewhere, many homes leach lead into the water from pipes and/or fixtures). Brief, accidental contamination by microbes (E. coli, giardia, cryptosporidia, etc.) or other contaminants. If you live in an agricultural region, unacceptable levels of nitrates or organic compounds (even if they are below regulated levels). Our Tap Water is usually safe to drink but in many cases, certainly in parts of cyprus it can have a distinct taste and sometimes an unpleasant odour. Whilst this itself does not mean it is contaminated with anything harmful, why take the risk with your health. Installing a Green Genie Aqua pure system will give you a noticable difference and offer additional safety and cost saving.
The contaminants most people using public water would be liable to experience at harmful or unacceptable levels are:
It also saves lugging heavy bottles of water from the shops or having to hoist them onto dispensers.

The Green Genie Aqua Pure System is a commercial grade system suitable for all areas where you need purified water suitable for drinking and food preparation. It features a full size 10” clear view triple housing with multistage purification utilising a unique cartridge combination including KDF. KDF® Process Media are high-purity, granulated copper and zinc-based alloys that treat water through a process based upon the principle of Oxidation Reduction. Originally, KDF was shorthand for Kinetic Degradation Fluxion. Scale Reduction “Basically, the reaction of the KDF media, modifies the crystal structure of the scale compound (calcium carbonate), changing it from calcite to aragonite, In this modified form, aragonite is suspended in the water until removed by the filter.
Our Aqua Pure Systems use a three-stage KDF/GAC cartridge that inhibits bacteria formation, removes sediment, cysts, chlorine, heavy metals, pesticides and more, while leaving the healthy minerals present in your water. KDF actually neutralizes chlorine! And the effectiveness of the GAC is extended by using KDF to remove chlorine.
Stage 1 - Mechanical Filtration
Mechanical filtration is achieved when the dimension of the particle is larger than the hole in the filter. This form of filtration removes suspended particles, such as silt, sediment, sand, rust, dirt, and other un-dissolved matter. Our cartridge system employs a staged mechanical system that is measured in microns, as water enters the cartridge, it is passed through a 5 micron pre-filter. As a point of reference, 1 micron equals 1/25,000 of an inch and a human hair is about 100 microns in diameter.
Stage 2 - Electro-chemical Oxidation-Reduction Process KDF
In the next stage, the water passes through a bed of a media made of a special high-purity alloy blend of two dissimilar metals - copper and zinc KDF and, it must be placed here, before the carbon, to protect the carbon from bacteria growth. This media, patented in 1987 by KDF Fluid Treatment, Inc., is a major advancement in water treatment technology that works on the electro-chemical and spontaneous-oxidation-reduction principles. Chlorine is instantaneously and almost inexhaustibly oxidized. Iron and hydrogen sulfide are oxidized into insoluble matter and attach to the surface of the media. Heavy metals such as lead, cadmium, and aluminum are removed from the water by the electrochemical process. They are attracted to the surface of the media, much like a magnet. The media inhibits bacteria growth throughout the entire unit (in fact, has been shown to reduce it up to 90%.
This special Cartridge uses the patented KDF filtering media which eliminates contaminants from water by utilizing electrochemical oxidation reduction. Chemical Properties of KDF include its ability to kill algae and fungi, control bacterial growth, remove Chlorine, Pesticides, Organic matter, Rust, Unpleasant taste and odour Hydrogen sulphide, Iron, Lead, Calcium, Aluminium, Mercury, Arsenic and other inorganic compounds. Combined with Activated Carbon it creates an excellent all round cartridge with an extremely long life capacity.
Stage 3 - Adsorption: Granulated Activated Carbon
Granulated activated carbon (GAC) is universally recognized and widely used as an effective adsorbent for a wide variety of organic contaminants, such as herbicides, pesticides, industrial chemicals, and trihalomethanes (THM's). Carbon is extremely porous and provides a large surface area for contaminants to collect (the surface area of the carbon in our filter would equal the surface of 50 football fields). Carbon-only filters must also use their capacity for chlorine removal, resulting in a shortened life. They also may use a bituminous coal carbon, which is good at removing chlorine, but not as effective at removing chemicals. We use a high-grade coconut shell carbon that is most effective at removing chemicals. Coconut shell carbon provides a significantly higher volume of micropores than either coal-, wood- or lignite-based carbon. As a result, it is more effective than other carbon types in removing trihalomethanes (THMs) and other chemicals from municipally supplied water. Since our KDF filter removes the chlorine before it reaches the carbon, the carbon capacity is not wasted for chlorine and is free to concentrate more effectively on organic contaminants.
Activated carbon, also called activated charcoal or activated coal, is a form of carbon that has been processed to make it extremely porous and thus to have a very large surface area available for adsorption or chemical reactions. The word activated in the name is sometimes substituted by active. Due to its high degree of microporosity, just one gram of activated carbon has a surface area in excess of 500 m² (or about 2 tennis courts), as determined typically by nitrogen gas adsorption. Sufficient activation for useful applications may come solely from the high surface area, though further chemical treatment often enhances the adsorbing properties of the material. Activated carbon is usually derived from charcoal and is used to treat poisonings and overdoses following oral ingestion. It is thought to bind to poison and prevent its absorption by the gastrointestinal tract. In rare situations activated charcoal is used in Intensive Care to filter out harmful drugs from the blood stream of poisoned patients. Activated carbon has become the treatment of choice for many poisonings, and other decontamination methods such as ipecac-induced emesis or stomach pumping are now used rarely.
